Overview

The Senior Healthcare Planner is a key leader responsible for the planning, programming, and conceptual design of complex healthcare projects. This role works closely with client executive leadership, user groups, and internal project teams to develop innovative, functional, and evidence-based healthcare environments. The Senior Healthcare Planner provides thought leadership throughout all early project phases and supports project delivery through construction administration while mentoring internal staff and contributing to business development efforts.

Key Responsibilities

Planning, Programming & Master Planning

  • Lead the planning and conceptual design of healthcare projects of varying size and complexity.
  • Develop program documents, diagrams, and conceptual layouts that support client goals and operational needs.
  • Facilitate and lead meetings with client leadership, physicians, administrators, and user groups to build consensus and resolve planning challenges.
  • Create departmental and functional flow relationships that support efficient operations, patient safety, and design innovation.
  • Ensure client program and project objectives are clearly defined and addressed during early project phases.


Design Leadership & Client Engagement

  • Present planning concepts and design solutions professionally to client leadership, boards, and stakeholder groups.
  • Demonstrate expertise in current healthcare programming, planning methodologies, and evidence-based design principles.
  • Stay current with healthcare design trends, including sustainability, patient safety, and innovative care delivery models.
  • Research and implement state-of-the-art planning and design concepts tailored to each client.
  • Support business development efforts by collaborating with healthcare leadership to pursue and develop new clients.


Project Support & Collaboration

  • Work closely with owners, contractors, consultants, and internal project teams to implement planning concepts through project completion.
  • Assist project teams during schematic design, design development, construction documents, and construction administration as needed.
  • Provide clear written narratives describing functional use, adjacencies, operational goals, expansion capabilities, and design intent.
  • Meet internal and external schedules and budget requirements.
  • Mentor architects, project coordinators, and design professionals in healthcare planning and design best practices.


Requirements


Education & Experience

  • Professional degree in Architecture or related field from an accredited program; Master’s degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of healthcare planning and design experience, including ambulatory and acute care environments.
  • Demonstrated experience leading healthcare planning efforts and engaging executive-level stakeholders.
  • Involvement in professional presentations at conferences, education forums, or industry organizations preferred.


Certifications (Preferred)

  • EDAC
  • ACHA
  • LEED AP or LEED accreditation


Technical Skills

  • Strong knowledge of healthcare planning and design software, including Revit.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required.
  • Adobe Creative Suite knowledge helpful.
